Understanding the different types of Documents in mAIscribe

Learn what is Summary, Letter and Summary for Patient - how to use and what is each one for.

mAIscribe has three core document types—Summary, Letter, and Patient Summary.

You can easily generate these documents for each consultation without additional effort.

Tip: Once you see the green ticker it means you have generated that document.

Note: LiveScribe is not a type of document, but our Live AI Scribe - learn more here.

1. Summary: Your Medical Notes for the Patient Record

The Summary is your core medical note, designed to be saved in the patient’s record.

It captures the key details of the consultation and can be formatted using different templates to fit your preferred style (more on Templates here).

How to use it:

  1. After pausing your recording, choose a template from the "Write Summary" button
  2. Check the notes and make any edits you might need
  3. Using the icons at the bottom, copy the notes, rate them (thumbs up/down) or ask the AI to regenerate.
    1. Rating it helps us improve the quality of the notes
    2. Regenerating the notes might improve it's accuracy - tells the AI it didn't get it right
  4. Copy your notes to your EMR system

2. Letter: AI-Suggested Referral and Correspondence

The Letter function is designed for generating referral letters and medical correspondence.

Unlike the Summary, which remains within the patient’s file, Letters are intended to be sent to specialists, allied health professionals, or other relevant parties.

mAIscribe’s AI suggests the most relevant referral letter based on the issues discussed during the consultation. For example:

  • If a patient presents with mental health concerns, you may see an option to refer to a psychologist.

  • If the consultation involves multiple issues (e.g., back pain, COVID-19, and a general check-up), the AI will attempt to identify the most appropriate referral for each case.

How to use it:

  1. After pausing your recording, choose a template from the "Letter" button
  2. Check the notes and make any edits you might need
  3. Using the icons at the bottom, copy the notes, rate them (thumbs up/down) or ask the AI to regenerate.
    1. Rating it helps us improve the quality of the notes
    2. Regenerating the notes might improve it's accuracy - tells the AI it didn't get it right
  4. Go to the word processor in your EMR, select the section of notes where you traditionally hand-type the referral, and paste it there.
  5. You can then print and/or send it electronically to patient and/or third party

3. Patient Summary: A Consultation Recap in Lay Terms

The Patient Summary is a simplified version of the consultation, designed to be shared with patients in clear, easy-to-understand language (lay terms).

This is particularly useful for:

  • Elderly patients who may struggle to remember details from their visit

  • Caregivers or family members who need a summary of the discussion

  • Patients who require a quick recap of their diagnosis, treatment plan, or follow-up steps

How to use it:

  1. After pausing your recording, choose a template from the "Summary to Patient" button
  2. Check the notes and make any edits you might need
  3. Using the icons at the bottom, copy the notes or rate them (thumbs up/down)
  4. Copy the notes into a document you can print and hand it over to your patient
